The Hobart and William Smith campus will be alive with the vibrant sound of jazz music on the weekend of Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14. For the second summer in a row, Bob Masteller ’60 is coming to pay a visit to his alma mater and he’s bringing his band. Masteller, master of the trumpet, the cornet, and the fluegelbone will be accompanied by vocalist Tish Oney, Brian Murphy on the vibraphone, Dave Solazzo on the piano, Bill Kahl on the bass, and Joel Carberry on the drums.
The band’s performance will be a throw-back to the 1950s when Masteller, as a Hobart student, led a series of jazz groups on campus. At the time, he had already been playing jazz music for nearly a decade, beginning with his father’s band when he was just 12 years old. Today, his lifestyle reflects his passion for jazz as he is the owner of The Jazz Corner, which is a highly-rated jazz club and gourmet restaurant located in Hilton Head, S. C. A former Senior Vice President of The Sea Pines Company, Masteller has succeeded in combining his knack for business with his creative side.
Lead vocalist, Tish Oney, also has a history with Hobart and William Smith Colleges as a vocal instructor. Oney, a recent recipient of a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, has released her debut CD titled “Forever Friend.” This album earned her the first of her two SAMMY award nominations so far.
This year, Jazz lovers will also experience a new event. Rev. Lesley Adams has been working with Bob Masteller to incorporate some of his music into the Sunday morning mass to create a “Jazz Mass.” The Jazz Mass is an optional event that will take place from 10- 11 a.m. and will be followed by the Sunday Brunch.
Masteller, Oney, and the rest of the band will perform at the Scandling Campus Center, located on the Hobart and William Smith campus. Tickets for Friday night (5 – 9 p.m. entertainment with hors d’oeuvres) are $15 and Saturday (1-6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres) are $25. Tickets for both Friday and Saturday are $35. Tickets for Sunday Brunch and Jazz (11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.) are $25. The Sunday Jazz Mass is open to everyone. Tickets can be purchased at St. Peter’s Church, HWS Conferences and Events Office, Irene’s Coffee House, Area Records, or online at www.hws.edu/offices/conferences/index.aspx. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy music program. For more information, call the HWS Conferences and Events Office at (315) 781-3103.
