Ryan Conley ’10 has taken on not one, but two internships at prominent commercial real estate firms in Rochester, N.Y., this summer. Conley is working for Wilmorite Properties, Inc. and Pyramid Brokerage Company and has had the opportunity to experience many aspects of the field.
Wilmorite is a leading commercial real estate development and management company, responsible for the management and development of all Rochester-area shopping centers, in addition to a mixed-use development at Rochester Institute of Technology called Park Point.
Conley’s internship is located at the Eastview Mall office, where he works under the guidance of General Manager, Michael Kauffman. Eastview Mall is one of the premier shopping centers in New York State, with a variety of tenants.
During the course of the internship, Conley is working on many projects, such as collecting information to compare past and current financial data in an effort to ensure that the mall is operating at financial efficiency, administering tenant surveys in hopes of understanding the successes and failures of the mall so that management can improve the services provided to all 166 tenants, and conducting market research.
“My experience so far with Wilmorite has taught me a considerable amount, as I continue to learn about the management and development of a premier shopping center,” says Conley.
Conley’s internship at the Rochester office of the Pyramid Brokerage Company, considered Upstate New York’s largest commercial real estate services firm, offers insight into a different area of the field. Pyramid serves a diverse cliental including individual investors and major multinational companies. Pyramid’s main services focus on brokerage, commercial real estate advising clients on the investment and financing of properties, impaired asset services for obsolete, dysfunctional or environmentally-challenged properties, market research and offering services to clients who are looking to invest or develop properties into sites for hospitality services.
At Pyramid, Conley works with the Rochester office’s President, John Manilla. Conley has been assisting him with efforts to attract a tenant to a property listing. These steps include conducting market research necessary to understand advantages and disadvantages of a property and determining tenant-property compatibility.
“Both of these internships are proving to be a great experience for me; I am not only learning an enormous amount about the industry, but they are also helping me understand what I excel at in the workplace,” says Conley.
Conley is a public policy and urban studies double major with a minor in political science. He is a member of the Orange Key Honor Society, Chimera, and the Druids. He is also a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He has been a resident adviser and a member of the Hobart tennis team. During the spring 2009 semester, Conley studied abroad in Carmarthen, Wales at Trinity University College. While in Wales he completed an internship conducting research on the Fairtrade Towns initiative.
