John Peck ’11 and Kelly Biggs ’11 are hard at work, finishing classes and studying for finals; however, the Hobart and William Smith class presidents have their eyes set on another milestone in their college careers – Senior Week. After months of planning, the two are eager to share the exhilarating week of activities prior to graduation with their closest friends and 2011 classmates.
“This year we tried to get really creative. We’ve already been bowling at 75 days, and had a class outing to the Beef and Brew at 50 days. We even had snow cones to celebrate 25 days until graduation!” remarks John Peck.
Senior Week will kick off with a Taste of Geneva the evening of Tuesday, May 10, during which members of the classes of 2011 will have the opportunity to explore the finest Geneva has to offer one last time before graduating. On Wednesday, May 11, seniors will have the opportunity to take part in a Seneca Lake Wine Tour with their closest friends, followed by Pizza Wars, allowing students to decide – after four years of careful research – who serves the best pie in town.
Events will continue on the morning of Thursday, May 12, with the traditional Deans’ Morning Reception. Later that evening, seniors are invited to Houghton House for a formal Senior Dinner, during which students will enjoy the words of student-elected keynote speaker Professor of Sociology Jack Harris.
In years past, the Presidential Toast following dinner, has included lots of dancing and live music provided by the President’s Garage Band, who are rumored to make an appearance at this year’s festivities. The talented group of musicians is comprised of HWS faculty and staff, and headed by, of course, the President himself – Mark D. Gearan.
Senior week will come to a close on Friday, May 13 with some of the week’s most traditional and beloved events. In the late afternoon, William Smith seniors will participate in the 34th annual William Smith Alumnae /Senior Welcome and champagne toast, while Hobart seniors will receive a paddle in honor of Agayentah during the Hobart Launch at Bozzuto Boathouse.
“We’ve worked really hard to be sure that everybody is included,” explains Peck, who is most looking forward to the Senior BBQ, which is set to take place on Friday evening in Saga. The BBQ will include great food, an outstanding live band, and performances by HWS a cappella groups – concluded, of course, with an evening fireworks display.
“We have a fantastic range of fun events – there is something for everybody,” says Peck. “It’s our last time to celebrate college together, as a class – and we’re going to make the most of it!”
