Nanzi Jiang ’13 is studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain, this summer as part of the CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange’s Barcelona Summer Language and Culture Program.
Last semester, Jiang heard about the program through the HWS Center for Global Education and immediately decided to complete the application. Based on her GPA, recommendation and essay, Jiang was chosen from the many applicants around the country to take part in the program.
“I love to travel, so I thought about going for a summer study program in Europe,” says Jiang. “I picked the Barcelona program because it fits with what I want to do in the future.”
An economics and biochemistry double major, Jiang is interested in career opportunities in marketing and trade.
Part of her coursework includes Spanish language classes. “From my experience, I know the best way to learn the language is to be with people who speak the language. I think that to really know a place, I have to live there. I will be staying there for five weeks, so I have ample time to explore one of the most exciting cities in Europe.”
Jiang has independently applied to two other study abroad programs. After her five weeks in Barcelona, she will also participate in volunteer programs around Europe, including a three-week camp for disabled children in Germany. There, she will be building houses for the community. Jiang will then travel to Iceland where she will participate in a forest restoration camp.
