Homecoming and Family Weekend will make a return this year – bigger and better than ever. From Friday, Oct. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 23, join the Colleges in showing your Hobart and William Smith pride. Last year, the Colleges welcomed more than 4,000 people – and 1,500 alums – to campus during the course of Homecoming Weekend.
“This year’s Homecoming and Family Weekend promises to be even bigger and better than last year,” says Director of Alumni Relations Jared Weeden ’91. “Jam-packed with activities, games and opportunities to relive those amazing years spent at the Colleges, the weekend will truly be a testament to the diversity and vibrancy of our alums, students and the entire HWS community.”
Alums, students and families alike will have the opportunity to explore campus from every angle as they attend athletic events, mini-college sessions and favorite Colleges tradition Fall Nationals. As always, the highlight of Nationals promises to be the soapbox derby race down William Smith Hill – which pits students and alums against one another in a one-of-a-kind race of hand-crafted, hodgepodge vehicles.
Saturday morning and afternoon, alums are also invited to go back to school by joining mini-college sessions. Offering a wide array of courses, alums will have the chance to meet with favorite faculty members and learn a bit more on an area of interest. This year’s courses include talks on immigration, the Civil War, forensic chemistry, African-American art, weather disasters and the 2012 Elections.
This year’s football game will see the Statesmen taking on Merchant Marine on the recently renovated Boswell Field Saturday at 1 p.m. Alums won’t want to miss the Super Tailgate party in Odell’s Parking lot prior to the game. Another of the major highlights this year is the 50th anniversary celebration of the Colleges’ victory in the G.E. College Bowl. The event will be commemorated on Saturday afternoon at halftime during the football game.
In the evening, be sure to hit the HWS Cabaret in the Vandervort Room. This year’s cabaret will “Go Pink” in honor of breast cancer awareness, and will feature performances by student a cappella groups The Hobartones and Three Miles Lost. Pink treats will be available and pink attire is encouraged.
Throughout the weekend, buildings such as the Finger Lakes Institute, Intercultural Affairs and the Salisbury Center for Career Development will be open for tours, giving alums the chance to explore so familiar – as well as some new – places. Each of the fraternities will welcome their brothers back to campus in numerous get-togethers and open houses. Alums will also have the chance to go back to school with mini-college classes taught by the Colleges’ outstanding faculty members.
“Come and show your Statesmen and Heron pride – you’ll be happy you did!” adds Weeden.
