Highlighting his experiences with technology and social media at both CNN and the World Bank, Felipe Estefan ’08 will return to campus as part of the Professionals in Residence series on Tuesday, March 6. His talk, titled “From CNN to the World Bank: Mobile Phones & Social Media,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Trinity 305.
During the course of his talk, Estefan will focus on how he incorporated social media into his role as planning producer at CNN and CNN en Español. He will then discuss the way in which, as part of the Open Governance team at the World Bank, mobile phones and the Internet are being used to achieve development outcomes around the world.
Estefan is a social media and public diplomacy expert who currently works as part of the Open Governance and ICT4Gov teams at the World Bank Institute. In that role, Estefan works on the use of mobile and web-based technology to make governments more open, more participatory and more transparent. Estefan also designs and implements social media and citizen engagement strategies.
Previously, Estefan worked as a planning producer at CNN, where he was part of the launch of three shows: “John King, USA,” “Choque de Opiniones” and “Directo USA.” Within his role, he also managed the social media presence for the shows, and produced interactive segments highlighting viewers’ opinions.
Estefan, a native of Bogotá, Colombia, was a media and society, and international relations double major with a double minor in peer education and human relations and writing colleagues. He graduated magna cum laude with honors in media and society and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
He graduated from the public diplomacy program at Syracuse University, holds an M.A. in international relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and an M.S. in public relations from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Relations.
