The Hobart College tennis team will begin the 2012-13 season on Saturday, Sept. 8, when it competes in the Nancy J. Heath Invitational at Allegheny College. The Statesmen will take on the host Gators in their first match of the day starting at 9 a.m., and then will play a second match beginning at 1 p.m.
Head Coach Tim Riskie will begin his second year at the helm of the program. He welcomes back eight student-athletes from last year’s roster and brings in four new players.
The Statesmen return a strong senior class. Sam DeLuccia, Bruce Grant, Alex James and Peter Cruice make up the Class of 2013. Grant earned All-Liberty League singles honors and All-Liberty League doubles honorable mention last season. He posted an 11-9 overall singles record, playing in all but two dual matches at the No. 1 spot. Grant paired with sophomore Michael Fields for a team-leading 10-5 No. 1 doubles record.
James garnered all-league singles honorable mention in 2011-12. He shared second on the team in singles wins with a 14-5 overall record. James played from No. 2 through No. 5, registering a 6-3 record at the No. 2 spot. James played the majority of his doubles matches with Matt Hursh ’12. The pair posted a 6-2 mark at No. 2 and won the two matches they played at the top spot. DeLuccia logged a 13-9 overall singles record last year, including a 7-1 mark at No. 3. He went 12-8 overall in doubles action. Cruice will also return looking to break into the starting lineup more in his senior season. He picked up two victories at No. 3 last year and earned two doubles wins at the No. 3 spot.
Juniors Nick Schoning and Ben Robinson as well as returning sophomore Luke DeLuccia will also be fighting for more playing time this season. Sophomore Michael Fields, an all-league doubles honorable mention selection, led Hobart last year with a 17-3 singles record. Fields played from No. 3 through No. 6 in the lineup last year, posting a 10-2 record at No. 5 and a 4-0 mark at No. 4.
Hobart welcomes four new faces to the 2012-13 team, sophomore Henry Smith and first-years, Joseph Sanders, Hunter Morgan and Tyler Grad. They all have been working hard for a chance at the starting lineup.
After Saturday’s matches, the Statesmen will round out their fall schedule with the ITA Northeast Regional Championships which will be played in Ithaca, N.Y., on Sept. 28-30.
