The theme and fraternity houses lining South Main Street have been decked out in green, purple, orange and white as students, staff and faculty alike prepare for a weekend of school spirit and revelry. As Friday begins at Hobart and William Smith, families and alums have started to arrive on campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend 2012.
With guests traveling from as close as Boston and as far as Los Angeles, the weekend promises to be one that will not be forgotten. More than 1,300 people have registered for the weekend, and an additional 3,000 attendees are expected to visit campus this weekend.
In the atrium of the Warren Hunting Smith Library, parents and alums are gathering to register for a weekend packed with events created to celebrate and enjoy the Colleges – and picking up some festive homecoming T-shirts and buttons. This year, homecoming activities include several athletic games, the Fall Nationals soap box derby race, a Barnburner lunch and tailgate, a research symposium and mini-college sessions.
“We’re very excited to participate in many of the activities throughout the weekend – especially the parents’ rowing lesson hosted by the crew team tomorrow,” says Betty Taylor P’16, of Ottawa, Canada, whose daughter, Brianna Taylor ’16, is a member of the Herons rowing team.
Taylor, joined by her husband, Bruce, is also looking forward to the President’s Forum Lecture featuring Political Journalist Eleanor Clift on Saturday morning. “Of course,” adds Taylor, “we’re most looking forward to seeing our daughter!”
Homecoming and Family Weekend 2012 also marks the first year of Quad-a-palooza. The evening extravaganza on Saturday will include music, food and family fun. The event will feature a barbecue,a “CABaret” talent show hosted by the Campus Activities Board, and more.
For those hoping to show their team spirit for the Herons and the Statesmen, there are several opportunities to athletics in action. Tomorrow, prepare to wave your HWS foam finger, as the Hobart football team will takes on Merchant Marine at 1 p.m. on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. Also be sure to check out the William Smith field hockey team as they play the University of Rochester at 2 p.m. on McCooey field.
