During winter break, students are traveling to other parts of the state, the country and around the world. And during that time, many students will make plans about the future with their career paths in mind.
“Career Services is a great resource to help students get a leg-up on their competition,” says Brandi Ferrara, director of the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development. “The staff at our office worked to prepare some great programs for students to participate in over break to access firsthand insights from industries of interest.”
The trips will work to combine classroom education with practical experience in the fields of finance, media and entertainment, politics, advertising and public relations, and the arts. With travel plans set for job hotspots around the country, alums from each location will open their office doors and board rooms to students seeking career guidance.
This year’s winter break experiences will take place in three major cities: New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. With consideration for students of all academic interests, Career Services opened the trips up to all students, although each is geared toward a certain field.
On the career excursions, students will meet with founders, CEOs, and employees of prestigious companies and organizations, all of whom started out with the same dynamic liberal arts education at HWS.
The winter break career experiences kicked off on Monday, Dec. 17, with the annual New York City Financial Experience Trip. During the three-day program, students met more than 30 alums currently working at high-profile jobs in the financial industry and sector in New York.
After the New Year, students will head to California for the L.A. Behind the Scenes Trip, scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 11. The L.A. trip focuses on careers in entertainment and students will visit screenwriters, review critics, and others involved in the industry. The trip is led by faculty of the Media and Society department. On a past trip, students met with Brad Falchuk ’93, co-creator, executive producer and director of the hit series “Glee.”
On Wednesday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 11, the annual Day on the Hill Experience will take place as the third student trip. Held in Washington, D.C., students will have the opportunity to meet with alums and explore the various facets of a career in politics.
In addition to the experiences in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development also is offering three, one-day career trips in New York City. Those student experiences are as follows:
The New York City Entertainment Trip will take place on Monday, Jan. 14, giving students the opportunity to meet with alums and explore the various facets of a career in entertainment.
The New York City Advertising and Public Relations Trip will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 15, offering students the opportunity to meet with alums and explore the various facets of a career in advertising and PR.
The New York City Arts Trip will take place Wednesday, Jan. 16, providing students the opportunity to meet with alums and explore various careers in the arts.
