In honor of the victims of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, the American flag on the HWS campus will be flown at half-staff until sunset Tuesday, Dec. 18.
The Colleges’ observance follows the proclamation issued by President Barack Obama who ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on all official U.S. buildings. Obama issued the proclamation following the Dec. 14 school shooting that left 26 dead including 20 children between the ages of five and 10, and six educators.
In a statement on the school shooting, President Obama said: “…our hearts are broken today – for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.”
The entire HWS community joins our nation in mourning the deaths and in offering solace to those affected by the tragedy.
