With more than two decades working in finance at firms such as BlackRock, Russ Brownback ’87 will bring his industry expertise to the Colleges on Tuesday, Feb. 12 for an information session geared toward students. The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Gulick Hall 100.
Titled “A Career in Finance,” the event with Brownback, a former managing director and senior portfolio manager at BlackRock, will cover aspects about economics and finance, as well as offer insights for students who want to learn more about industry expectations for after graduation.
In addition to the evening event, one-on-one appointments with Brownback also will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in Trinity 109. HWS students are invited to schedule individual sessions with Brownback by contacting The Salisbury Center of Career Services and Professional Development at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Brownback, who was an economics major at the Colleges and earned a graduate degree in finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, currently owns and operates a real estate holding company which encompasses investments in a variety of commercial real estate properties.
Brownback spent the majority of his professional life at Lehman Brothers, a global financial services firm. His role with the firm included client-facing credit trading (cash and derivatives), strategy, capital markets, and proprietary trading.
In May 2008, Brownback and 70 of his colleagues created R3 Capital Partners, a $2.2 billion multi-strategy hedge fund where he was one of the six founding partners. In May 2009, R3 agreed to merge with BlackRock, which offers risk management, strategic advisory and enterprise investment system services. At R3, Brownback worked as the managing director and senior portfolio manager until March 2012.
