The Hobart College squash team defeated No. 32 Tufts 5-4 in the CSA Team Championships consolation final in New Haven, Conn. The No. 31 Statesmen finished the year with a 10-14 record.
It was Hobart’s second win of the season over the Jumbos. The Statesmen earned a 6-3 victory over Tufts back on Jan. 19 in the Yale Round Robin.
Hobart went up 2-1 after the first three matches. Senior Charlie Merrill rallied to win 11-6, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7 at No. 9, and first-year Peter Sammis won in five games (8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6) at No. 6.
Senior Eric DeRose won his first game 11-2 and then won a marathon second game 20-18 and finished his match 9-11, 13-11, 11-8 for a victory at No. 8. First-year Danny Cabrera dropped his first game 5-11, but came back to win 11-4, 11-7, 11-7. The Statesmen held a 4-2 lead after the second round of matches. Senior Julian Snider was up 2-0 in his match, after 11-8, 11-3 wins, when the Jumbos tied things up 4-4 overall. Snider was also down in his third game, but fought back for a 12-10 win and to clinch the victory for Hobart.
