Senior Laura Cappio and first-year Alex Belden were presented with the William Smith College rowing team’s awards at the Herons’ end of year Athletics Banquet. Cappio took home the S. Ford Weiskittel Most Valuable Oarswoman Award and Belden earned the Rowing Coach’s Award.
A team captain, Cappio was three seat in the varsity eight this season. The Heron 1V enjoyed an exceptional spring season, winning its third consecutive gold medal at the Liberty League Championships, a second straight gold medal at the New York State Championships, as well as bronze medal efforts for the second year in a row at both the ECAC NIRC and the NCAA Division III Championships. Cappio was a part seven Liberty League Boat of the Week award winning crews this season, including a second place finish in the collegiate division at the Head of the Charles. She also earned a spot on the 2012-13 Liberty League All-Academic Team.
Belden was four seat in the novice eight this season. She won a gold medal at the New York State Championships, clipping runner up Ithaca by 0.48 seconds with RIT taking third, 0.18 seconds behind the Bombers. That race came one week after the Herons finished second to the Tigers by 0.51 seconds in the Liberty League Championships. Belden and the William Smith novice eight also turned in solid performances in the fall’s Head of the Fish (4th out of 28 crews) and the Head of the Genesee (6th out of 16).
For the second year in a row, the William Smith rowing team finished fourth at the NCAA Championship and won its third straight Liberty League Championship.
