Earlier this month, Scott Thomas ’88 was named the 2013 Atlanta Man of the Year for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Georgia Chapter. Seventeen Atlanta community leaders competed for 10 weeks to raise the most money possible for LLS. Thomas, vice president of consumer marketing for the Cartoon Network, was named the 2013 Man of the Year for raising $103,482 of the Atlanta event total of $575,899. The honor was presented at the campaign’s Grand Finale Gala.
Thomas first became involved with LLS in 2008 when his mother, Rosemary, was diagnosed with lymphoma. In 2009, he served on a campaign team for the inaugural Man of the Year recipient. Then, in 2010, Thomas was stricken with a life threatening blood disorder which was ultimately cured by Rituxan, a drug which LLS played an instrumental role in discovering. His mother is now in remission, also thanks to Rituxan.
“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a critical resource to thousands of blood cancer patients and I am thrilled to be a part of this worthwhile campaign. I share this award with my family, friends and colleagues who supported me throughout these last 10 weeks,” says Thomas.
Every dollar the candidates raised counted as one “vote” and the candidates with the most votes were awarded the titles Man & Woman of the Year. Honorees are entered into the national competition for Man & Woman of the Year, which will be named in July. All the candidates competed in honor of LLS’s Boy & Girl of the Year, local children who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others.
Thomas earned a B.S. in biology from Hobart College.
