Ever since she was 10 years old, Kelsey Devane ’14 has had her heart set on travelling to France. This summer, her aspirations came true; she is in Aix-En-Provence, enrolled in a six-week program offered through the Colleges.
“When I first found out I had been accepted I was overwhelmingly excited,” says Devane, an international relations major. “For me, this has been something that I’ve had my heart set on since as long as I can remember, so you can only imagine my joy when I saw that congratulations e-mail in my inbox.”
Studying French as a minor, Devane notes that her interest in the subject had an early start.
“I have always been passionate about French,” she explains. “I picked it up as a child and never stopped absorbing the language and the culture; I am really intrigued by it.”
She is enrolled at the School of Social Science and Humanities in Aix-En-Provence, where she is taking two courses in politics: “Women in Politics” and “Ethics of War and Peace.”
With smaller-scale classes and a discussion-based curriculum, Devane notes that her experience in the classroom is similar to that at HWS, which she credits with preparing her for this experience.
“HWS gives a real sense of community and provides a realistic outlook on life,” she says. “There are so many things that the school offers to help you find exactly what it is that makes you tick and it teaches you how to take your future into your own hands and make of it exactly what you want.”
On campus, Devane is also a member of the club lacrosse team.
