Hobart College Head Football Coach Mike Cragg recently announced the six Statesmen that will serve as team captains for the 2013 season. On defense, senior linebackers Devin Worthington and Tom Elder, and senior free safety Jolyon Davis will lead the way, while on offense, senior running back Steven Webb, senior center Michael Green, and junior tackle Ali Marpet will be captains.
“Spring practice gives us a peek at next season and our players had a great spring.” says Cragg. “That’s due in no small part to the great leadership we got from our captains and our senior class. We’re excited for the season to get started.”
A 2012 D3football.com second team All-American, Worthington has been named to three preseason All-America teams. A fearsome pass rusher, he is coming off a junior season that saw him record 52 tackles, including 21.5 for loss and 10 sacks. Worthington produced a season-high eight tackles, including three for loss and two sacks, against St. Lawrence. He enters his final collegiate season second in career tackles for loss with 52 and third in career sacks with 26.5.
Elder played in all 13 games last season. He registered 33 tackles (10th on the team), recovered a pair of fumbles, and blocked a punt. Elder made a season-high six stops against Springfield. In 28 career games, he has 43 tackles.
In his first full season as a starter, Davis finished sixth on the team with 50 tackles, earning first team All-Liberty League honors. He also logged four pass breakups and an interception. Davis had a season-high nine tackles in the NCAA quarterfinals at St. Thomas. In 31 career games, he has 70 tackles six pass breakups, and two interceptions.
A 2012 D3football.com All-East third team selection, Webb led the Liberty League in rushing yards (1,197), rushing yards per game (92.1), rushing yards per carry (6.0, min. 8.0 carries per game), all purpose yards (1,525), and all purpose yards per game (117.3). He produced five 100-yard rushing games last season, including a season-high 199 yards and two touchdowns against Union. Webb also had a pair of 100-yard games during Hobart’s NCAA quarterfinal run, gaining 130 yards against No. 24 Wittenberg in the second round and 103 yards at No. 3 St. Thomas.
Green and Marpet and the rest of Hobart’s linemen allowed a Liberty League low eight sacks last season. The Statesmen ranked 10th in the nation in sacks allowed per game (0.6). Both Green and Marpet started all 13 games last season. They helped Hobart rush for a season-high 355 yards against Union and provided protection for a season-high 542 yards of total offense at WPI. A standout in the classroom, Green was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America second team. In 2012, Marpet was heralded as a D3football.com second team All-East and first team All-Liberty League selection. He was named to Lindy’s Sports Annuals 2013 preseason All-America second team.
Hobart begins its 120th varsity season at Dickinson on Saturday, September 7. Kickoff in Carlisle, Pa., is scheduled for noon. The Statesmen return 35 lettermen, including 13 starters, from last year’s team that won a school record 12 games against just one loss, securing the Liberty League championship with an unblemished 7-0 record.
