William Smith College first-year Ashley Lyon was named the Liberty League Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week after posting a 3-1 record in both singles and doubles play in the Mary Hosking Invitational this weekend.
In her first collegiate action, Lyon took home the B Flight Singles Consolation title. After falling to Geneseo’s Minzuan Yuan in B Flight Singles, Lyon went on to down the Blue Knights’ Veronica Skolnick 8-0 in her first round consolation match. She topped Rochester’s Darby McCall 8-1 and then defeated St. Lawrence’s Anna Young 8-6 in the consolation final.
In doubles action, she paired with classmate Annie Venditti in B Flight. The pair topped Ithaca’s Jodi Grosberg and Maddie Overholt 8-4 and defeated St. Lawrence’s Sarah Lipworth and Anna Young 8-5 on Day 1. Lyon then teamed with sophomore Sydney Arsenault for an 8-5 win over Geneseo’s Maggie Hale and Karli Hollins in the semifinals, before falling in the championship match.
The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 20 when they travel to take on St. John Fisher at 4 p.m.
