After a successful homecoming weekend for Hobart and William Smith athletics, three HWS teams were ranked No. 5 in national polls released this week. The William Smith soccer and field hockey teams, and the Hobart College football team all nabbed the No. 5 spot in their respective national rankings.
Coming off a 34-21 homecoming victory over Utica College, the football team debuted at No. 5 in the first American Football Coaches Association poll. The Statesmen (2-0) have never been ranked in the top 5 in the nation by the AFCA and their No. 7 ranking in the D3football.com poll matches the program’s highest ranking in that poll.
The Statesmen will begin their Liberty League title defense at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff at Brooks Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
After their second consecutive weekend of back-to-back victories, the Heron soccer team remained at No. 5 in this week’s D3soccer.com poll, and No. 6 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III Poll. The Herons nabbed two wins over Fredonia and Pitt-Bradford last weekend, improving their record to 6-1-0 overall.
The team will open Liberty League play on Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
The William Smith field hockey team is ranked fifth in the nation in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, their highest national ranking since 2004. The team’s 7-0 record is their best start since 2010. The Herons are coming off a 3-0 week that saw them top then Cortland 2-1 in overtime, outlast Manhattanville 5-4, and shut out Lebanon Valley 5-0. The victory over Lebanon Valley was the 400th of Head Coach Sally Scatton’s career, a milestone only six Division III coaches have reached.
Defending their title from last year, the field hockey team opens conference play on Friday, Sept. 27 against Rensselear at 4 p.m. on McCooey Field.
