Highlighting awareness of an important cause, the 4th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Week at HWS will be held from Sunday, Oct. 20 through Thursday, Oct. 24. The theme for this year is “Put Your Breast Foot Forward,” with several special events to be held on campus throughout the week.
“This is the 4th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Week and it serves exactly that purpose: to make people aware,” says Assistant Director of Residential Education & Club Sports Darnell Pierce, who has organized the week’s events. “The week also highlights ways in which people can be supportive of breast cancer research efforts.”
All monies raised throughout the week will be donated to Embrace Your Sisters, a short-term emergency financial service for people diagnosed with breast cancer in the Finger Lakes region.
“Nearly 100 percent of the organization’s revenue goes to women battling breast cancer,” Pierce says. “This fact is astounding, which is why we continue to support Embrace Your Sisters year after year.”
The kick-off event for Breast Cancer Awareness Week will be held on Sunday with the Pink Tie Affair Dinner and Drag Show at 6 p.m. in the Vandervort Room of the Scanlding Campus Center. Tickets are on sale at The College Store and in the Scandling Center during lunch hours for $5.
Following the first event, on Monday, Oct. 21, Saga will hold a Pink Desserts Display at lunchtime where students can decorate their own cupcakes. In addition, the Pink the Rink Hockey Competition will take place at 9 p.m. on Monday in the Geneva Recreational Center.
Push-ups for Pink will happen in the Scandling Campus Center lounge at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 22, followed later by an event for William Smith students called “Don’t Slack – Fit Your Rack” in collaboration with Victoria’s Secret in the Comstock Pondview Lounge at 9 p.m.
Events continue on Wednesday, Oct. 23, with Pamper Me Pink Spa Day held in the Scandling Campus Center from 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The week’s activities will wrap up on Thursday at noon with Bra Pong and prize giveaways in the Scandling Campus Center.
Annually, the week of events has been a significant way for members of the HWS community to support the cause and raise awareness about breast cancer.
