The HWS track and field club will hold their second annual Relay for Play on Sunday, Nov. 3. The proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Geneva Lakefront Childcare Center.
“The track and field club created the event last year to raise money for the Geneva Community Lakefront Playground,” says Darnell Pierce, assistant director of residential education and club sports and head coach and adviser to the club. “This year we decided to keep the name and concept so that funds could be donated to an organization that values the idea of health, play and recreation for children.”
The Relay for Play will take place on the indoor track at Bristol Field House at 4 p.m. The event is open to members of the HWS and greater Geneva communities, and runners of all levels. Participants must create four-person relay teams to register for the event. Each person will run a different distance and must follow the official relay order. The one mile will kick off the relay, followed by 800 meters, 400 meters, and 200 meters, respectively. With different distances to choose from and a focus on teamwork, Pierce believes the event is not so “daunting” to participants who have never run.
Teams can pre-register for the event online before Monday, Oct. 28 for $40. Registration after Oct. 28 will cost $60 per team. All funds are being donated to the Geneva Lakefront Childcare Center.
“We hope to raise money to allow the Geneva Lakefront Childcare Center to continue providing quality care, education and play to the children whom they serve,” Pierce says.
Last year, the event drew 11 teams, including a family who participated with their children and “had a blast,” says Pierce. The track and field club hopes to draw 25 or more teams to this year’s event.
“The event is about the cause and the teamwork more than anything,” Pierce says. “There isn’t an ‘I’ in play or relay!”
