Hobart College soccer team scored two goals in the first 17 minutes and went on to defeat visiting RIT 3-0 in a Liberty League contest played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen wrap up the regular season with an 11-7-1 overall record and a 3-4-1 mark in the Liberty League.
RIT falls to 8-7-3 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play.
First-year Charlie Kelly led Hobart with a goal and an assist. First-years Joe Busuttil and JP White each chipped in a goal for the Statesmen. Junior Mike Lucas played the first half in goal and stopped the only shot he faced. Sophomore Tyler Serafine came in for the second half and saved all four shots he faced to help Hobart clinch the shutout.
At 14:15, Kelly took a free kick from the left side of the field. He lined his shot into the box, and it bounced into the far corner of the goal. Kelly leads the Statesmen with 12 goals this year. Just 2:38 later, Hobart was awarded another free kick again on the left side of the field about 15 yards out from the box. In a play that looked very similar to Hobart’s first goal, Kelly again lofted the kick into the box. The Tigers’ goalie punched the ball away, but Busuttil was there to head home the rebound to make it 2-0.
In the 61st minute, White padded the Statesmen’s lead with his second goal this season. Sophomore DJ Clark pushed a pass ahead to White, who carried the ball into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net.
The Tigers came inches away from scoring with 16:42 remaining in the match. Sean Heinze blasted a shot on goal that banged off the crossbar. With 13:50 left, Matt Miles put a hard shot on goal from 10 yards outside of the box, but Serafine laid out for the diving stop.
Mark Reeves played all 90 minutes in goal for RIT. He finished with four saves. The Statesmen held a 14-12 edge in shots, while the Tigers held a 7-6 advantage in corners.
The game was the final match of the regular season for both teams.
