William Smith College seniors Arielle deLisser and Brooke Lyon represented the HWS sailing team at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Singlehanded National Championship this weekend. deLisser finished second out of 18 and Lyon came in ninth place.
The event took place in Providence, R.I., and eighteen women from across the country qualified for the event. deLisser and Lyon earned spots in the race after placing first and fourth, respectively at the Faye Bennet Trophy back on Sept. 28-29.
deLisser was making her third appearance in the singlehanded championship. Her second place finish in this year’s event was the best finish by a Heron sailor since 1999. The previous best was when deLisser took third place in 2012.
After completing six races on day 1 on Friday, deLisser was in first place. She finished in the top five in all six of those races. Six more races took place on Saturday, and deLisser earned her first victory in the second race of the day. On Sunday, the final seven races were held. deLisser earned another first place finish. Overall, she placed in the top three in nine out of 18 races. deLisser finished with 69 points for second place. Erika Reineke of Boston College claimed first with 49 points.
Lyon finished in ninth place. She placed in the top 10 in 16 out of 18 races. Lyon came in third place in her ninth and 13th races. It was the first time in her career that she had competed in the singlehanded national championship.
It was the fifth time William Smith sailors has competed in the Women’s Singlehanded National Championship dating back to 1999.
HWS will be back on the on Nov. 16-17 when it competes in the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship in Charleston, S.C., and the Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship in Ithaca, N.Y.
