Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Beth Kinne will discuss her recently published book, “Beyond the Fracking Wars: A Guide for Lawyers, Public Officials, Planners and Citizens,” with Susan Arbetter of the Capitol Pressroom radio show in Albany on Friday, Nov. 15. She will appear with the book’s co-editor, lawyer and educator Erica Levine Powers. The interview will run from 11:20 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Released in October, “Beyond the Fracking Wars” provides an introduction to the technology of unconventional oil and gas drilling, the structure of the oil and gas industry, and the legal and regulatory infrastructure underlying the current “shale gale.” It features case studies from around the country, as well as an international chapter, and is designed “to be a practical guide for attorneys, municipalities, planners and citizens who are figuring out what this type of development looks like and if and how it might be compatible with the future they envision for their communities and their country,” says Kinne.
Kinne received her B.A. from the University of Virginia, an M.S. from the University of British Columbia and her JD from the University of Washington, School of Law.
Prior to joining the Colleges in 2008, Kinne served as an associate attorney at Leavenworth & Karp, P.C. in Colorado, where she negotiated and drafted contracts relating to land use and water law practice. Kinne also served as a law clerk with the Washington State Attorney General in their Division of Natural Resources. Kinne has presented her work in the U.S. and China, and recently organized the Finger Lakes Institute’s Environment and Development Conference, which focused primarily on hydrofracking.
The interview with Arbetter is the first of a three-part series on the book that will take place over the next three months. Subsequent programs will likely feature some of the other authors for the book.
Interviews are available via livestream and are archived on the Capitol Pressroom website.
