The William Smith soccer team is headed to San Antonio, Texas on Dec. 6 to compete in a national semifinal match following its sectional championship victory over Ithaca on Sunday at Boswell Field.
The Hobart football team also captured a 34-7 victory over Gallaudet University on Saturday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship and will take on St. John Fisher College at noon on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Boswell Field.
On Saturday, the No. 3 ranked Herons scored in the 36th minute to defeat No. 15 The College of New Jersey 1-0 in the sectional semifinal match at Cozzens Field. Junior Madeline Buckley scored the lone goal for the Herons.
The Herons followed up Saturday’s victory with a 1-0 win over No. 7 Ithaca in the sectional championship on Sunday at Boswell field, earning a spot in the national semifinals in San Antonio. Junior Dineo Mmutla drilled a hard shot from about 25 yards out into the back of the net to give the Herons a 1-0 advantage in the 65th minute.
The Herons (21-1-0) extended their win-streak to 21 matches and set a new William Smith record for wins in a season.
William Smith will take on Capital (19-4-1) in a national semifinal match on Dec. 6, at noon in San Antonio, Texas. The Crusaders battled to a 1-1 tie with top-ranked Washington (Mo.), and advanced 3-2 on penalty kicks.
Statesmen running back Steven Webb rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns and broke the Hobart season rushing touchdown record with his 20th score of the year on a 58-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half to propel Hobart to the next round. The Statesmen are 7-7 all-time in NCAA play, reaching the quarterfinal round for the first time in 2012. The Statesmen finished the regular season with a 9-0 record (7-0 in the league), the program’s second consecutive undefeated regular season. Hobart is making its third consecutive and eighth overall NCAA Playoff appearance.
