Hobart and William Smith Colleges have been honored with one Gold Award, three Silver Awards and one Bronze Award for entries submitted to the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) 2014 District II Accolades Awards Program. Annually, CASE recognizes institutions and professionals in higher education for exceptional work across specialties ranging from development and alumni relations to photography and websites.
“Seneca Lake Steam,” a picture taken by HWS Photographer Greg Searles ’13, won the CASE Gold Award in the “Color Photography” category. Photographed in January 2013, the image captures an unusual cold-weather event known as “steam fog” as it takes place over Seneca Lake at the edge of campus. The fog occurs when cold air flows over warm water, with the moisture and heat rising into the atmosphere. The gold-winning Seneca Lake Steam photo is featured above.
The Colleges’ 2012 Celebrate webpage, a three-day online giving campaign for members of the HWS community to honor others during the holiday season, received the Silver Award in the “Special Purpose Website” category. With nearly 350 people recognized during last year’s campaign, HWS is facilitating the 2013 Celebrate campaign again this December. One CASE awards judge noted, “We love that anyone and everyone can be honored.”
The HWS “Results” book, which is handed out to prospective students and families visiting campus, received the CASE Silver Award for “Student Recruitment: Individual Print Pieces.” Highlighting The Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development, in particular the Colleges’ Pathways program, the publication shows how an HWS education results in valued outcomes.
Following on the success of the “Quake on the Lake” social media campaign that won a Silver Award in the 2013 District II Accolades Awards Program and again in the 2013 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards Program, “Quake on the Lake II” has received a Silver Award in the “social media” category for the 2014 program. Using an 8-bit video game visualization to engage younger alums, the social media fund raising challenge pitted Hobart College against William Smith College for an online boxing match for school pride.
Rounding out the CASE District II honors for HWS this year was a Bronze Award in the “Fundraising Packages” category for a suite of materials celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Wheeler Society, the Colleges’ planned giving recognition society. The package included a specially designed Wheeler Society booklet detailing the history of planned giving at HWS, a “timeline” graphic of important gifts and events over the past 25 years, an estate planning guide, opportunities for making a planned gift and a list of all Wheeler Society members. In order to continue engagement, additional materials have been and are scheduled to be mailed, including a reply card.
