William Smith College senior Sasha Borenstein and first-year Melanie Patterson were named the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by the conference office today. The duo helped the Herons to four victories over the holiday break, extending the team’s winning streak to six games.
Borenstein averaged a team-high 19.3 ppg. She recorded 13 points and three rebounds in a 65-60 win over Buffalo State in the first round of the Daytona Beach Shootout. The following day, Borenstein made eight 3-pointers, one off the school record, and finished with a then-career-high 26 points as well as four rebounds, in a 91-66 victory over Potsdam. She was named to the Shootout’s All-Tournament Team.
On Friday at Cortland, Borenstein tied the Heron record for 3-pointers made in a game, canning nine against a Red Dragon defense that entered the contest 87th out of 426 teams in Division III in 3-point field goal defense (.247). She scored a career-high 27 points in the 81-63 win over the Red Dragons. On Sunday, Borenstein produced 11 points and three boards in a 74-69 win over Rochester, the Herons first over the Yellowjackets since 2000.
Borenstein leads the nation in 3-pointers made per game, 4.11, and is seventh in 3-point percentage, .493. She has made at least one 3-pointer in 25 consecutive games. Borenstein has made 231 career 3-pointers, third among active players in Division III and 20 shy of Jill Brower’s school record.
Through nine games, Borenstein is averaging 14.8 ppg, ninth in the league. She also ranks third in the conference in field goal percentage, .489.
Patterson averaged 7.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.5 apg, and 1.3 spg during the holiday break. She notched seven points against the Bengals. Patterson contributed 10 points and two steals against the Bears. At Cortland, she had nine points and a season-high matching four rebounds. Against Rochester, Patterson chipped in two points, three boards, a team-high four assists, and two steals.
Patterson has appeared in all nine games and is averaging 7.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg, and 2.1 apg. She’s shooting .460 from the floor, .300 from beyond the arc, and .700 from the line.
William Smith wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 7-2 record. The Herons open Liberty League play on Friday, Jan. 10, when they visit Rensselaer. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Fans can follow the game online with live stats and video.
