Coming off of a successful Saturday of basketball for both the Herons and the Statesmen in games against Bard and Vassar, William Smith and Hobart will host Clarkson at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively on Friday, Feb. 14.
Last Saturday, William Smith trailed Vassar by three with two minutes to go in overtime, but scored the game’s final six points to secure a 75-72 Liberty League win. With Hobart’s 68-52 win last weekend, the Liberty League leading Statesmen improved to 17-5, 11-2 in conference play.
In a game that neither team led by more than five points, William Smith tied Vassar with 53 seconds left in regulation and battled to the end of overtime for the win. First-year Melanie Patterson led the Herons with a career-high 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and a game-high five steals.
Hobart built an early lead and never trailed the Brewers in its victory. Seniors Richie Bonney and Joe Gibbons took on leading roles for the Statesmen. Bonney scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including a 3-pointer, and 4-of-6 at the line. He also pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds as Hobart ruled the glass 38-28. Gibbons added 11 points, six boards, four assists, and a smothering defensive performance against one of the best 3-point shooters in the league. The victory gives the Statesmen a two-game advantage in the loss column over the rest of the conference with three games remaining in the regular season.
Both games against Clarkson will be held in Bristol Gym.
