Day Sports Camps have returned to Hobart and William Smith this summer. From Monday, June 30 to Thursday, July 3, young student-athletes will be on campus to take their game to the next level.
The Day Sports Camps, which began in the late 1970s, are currently offering lacrosse for girls and soccer for boys and girls entering third through eighth grades. The campers have the opportunity to learn and improve from HWS coaches and current players, some of whom just won the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer National Championship this past December.
William Smith Soccer Assistant Coach Chas Allen, entering his ninth year with the team, will lead the soccer camp. Allen is a member of the coaching staff that received the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year Award eleven times, including 2013 when he helped coach the Herons to the DIII National Championship.
Allen says the camp can have a huge impact on young athletes as they prepare for their future.
“It helps them on a number of levels, improves their technical and tactical ability, but also their sense of enjoyment for the game,” he says. “It encourages them to develop a different understanding for the game that they may have received from other coaches, a different perspective.”
William Smith Lacrosse Assistant Coach Rebecca Lampson will be leading the lacrosse camp this year. Lampson joined the William Smith lacrosse coaching staff in 2014. She graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2012 where she was a three-year captain.
The campers will hone their skills, master the fundamentals, and experience challenging competition under the direction of these talented coaches.
In addition to their time on the field, full-day campers will have the opportunity to eat lunch in the Scandling Campus Center and finish the day with a swim in Bristol Pool.
The camps are coordinated by Director of Conferences and Events Erica Cooney-Connor.
“Each year, Hobart and William Smith welcome visitors and host a wide range of events on campus throughout the summer months,” Cooney-Connor says. “The Day Sports Camps are a great tradition at the Colleges and provide an opportunity for young people from the community to explore and enjoy athletics right on campus.”
