This week, Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Environmental Studies Summer Youth Institute (ESSYI) welcomed talented high school students from all over the world to campus for two weeks of immersive education in environmental studies.
Led by HWS faculty, students took core samples from Seneca Lake aboard the William Scandling, studied one of the largest active landfills in the country at Seneca Meadows in Seneca Falls, and explored the Finger Lakes ecology in classrooms, laboratories, nature preserves and the local environment. At the same time, they took classes focused on environmental economics, energy, philosophy, religion, nature, art, environmental sustainability, conservation and biodiversity, among others.
Next week, students will travel to the Adirondack State Park for a four-day camping trip that includes hiking and paddling through the area, as well as panel discussions and group presentations on biodiversity and conservation, through partnerships with the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and local environmental non-profits such as the Wild Center in Tupper Lake.
Introducing students to a variety of environmental issues and perspectives on nature and the environment for more than 20 years, ESSYI combines classroom activities and fieldwork to create a unique curriculum that brings students closer to the environment. Through ESSYI, students engage with the different perspectives and disciplines from which a person can explore the environment and environmental issues, exploring a range of topics in environmental policy, economics, and ethics, to see the natural world through the eyes of artists, historians, philosophers, and scientists.
