Through an internship with the Director’s Department at NBC News, Maxwell Barsh ’19 had the opportunity to explore the field of news production, covering the arena of politics on the national stage.
During the internship, Barsh worked with the production team for “Nightly News” and the “Today Show” where he received firsthand experience working in a control room. He also assisted in preparing crews to travel and broadcast from Cleveland and Philadelphia for the Republican National Convention and Democratic National Convention, respectively, as well as the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates.
“This summer was one of the craziest election cycles that many people can remember and there was never a dull day,” says Barsh, a computer science major whose responsibilities also included assisting leadership and production crews.
Barsh also traveled with his supervisor and a news team to attend the 2016 Democratic National Convention where Barsh was introduced to various political figures.
“At HWS I learned that making lasting connections is very important,” he says. “I took this idea and put it to use, making sure that I always followed up conversations with emails so that I would be remembered.”
Barsh will study abroad in Rome, Italy in fall 2017.
