This summer, Leslie Colunga ’19 is working as an estimating intern at Shawmut Design and Construction in Los Angeles, Calif. In the position, she is communicating with subcontractors primarily receiving pricing for projects. A studio art and architecture double major, the internship is providing Colunga with hands-on experience in the field.
“An estimating intern requires you to be highly organized. I have begun working with subcontractors and customers keeping them updated while also managing the other bids with subcontractors,” Colunga says.
Through the internship, she also has had the opportunity to visit construction sites and learn the procedures for estimating material and overall construction costs.
Colunga found the internship through the Posse Foundation, of which she is a member of HWS Posse 3. “My wonderful mentor at HWS, Associate Dean of Students Stacey Pierce, helped me through the process in terms or resumes and recommendations,” she says.
“As I was looking for internships, Shawmut immediately caught my attention when the position said that they would collaborate to help you through the process allowing you to gain full knowledge of material,” Colunga adds.
On campus, Colunga is a member of the Rugby club team and serves as a resident assistant. In the fall semester she will be working at the Davis Gallery at Houghton House as a gallery assistant.
Shawmut Design and Construction has locations across the country. They are dedicated to sustainable building practices and are fully employee owned.
