Underscoring the importance of service within the Hobart and William Smith and greater Geneva community, the co-chairs of the Spring Day of Service are expanding their outreach to include increased participation of faculty and staff. The event will be held on Saturday, April 8 from noon to 4 p.m.
Each year, more than 400 students work on volunteer projects throughout Geneva and the local area with projects ranging from cleaning community parks and trails, volunteering at local schools, and helping non-profit agencies with various tasks.
This year, the co-chairs of Days of Service — Dominique DeRubeis ’18, Molly Gorelick ’19 and Alexander Rogers ’18 — are encouraging HWS faculty and staff to work with students of all class years to volunteer their time and work on projects around the area. Children over 10 years old of faculty or staff are encouraged to participate as well, and childcare will be provided for those who have children under 10. Faculty members are encouraged to engage students in their classes as well as fellow department members.
“When you do service well, the things achieved in the community and in your career can connect,” says Dominique DeRubeis ’18. “I was interviewing for an internship where they mentioned community service days for staff across the company and instantly I knew that was something I wanted to bring back to Geneva. As leaders, I think we will learn a lot about the spirit of collaboration.”
One of the largest groups of HWS volunteers will assist at the ninth annual Geneva Reads Book Fest at the Geneva Community Center. At the Book Fest, volunteers will read a children’s book and host an engaging craft activity for the group. Other sites include St. Peter’s Church in Geneva, Kashong Creek Conservation Area, Millie’s Food Pantry in Penn Yan and Geneva Peeps.
All participants will receive a free T-shirt and pizza on the Quad prior to their dismissal. The group that has the most participation will receive Day of Service stickers and a surprise for their contributions.
Faculty and staff registration is ongoing and student registration will begin in the Scandling Campus Center on Monday, March 20. If you would like more information, please contact one of the student coordinators or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All participants can register here by April 5.
