The William Smith College lacrosse team is ranked No. 1 in Division III in this week’s US Lacrosse Magazine. In addition, the Herons moved up one spot to No. 8 in the IWLCA poll.
The Herons picked a 13-3 win over Rensselaer on Friday and topped Skidmore 8-3 on Saturday to improve to 12-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Liberty League. William Smith is riding a nine-game win streak that began back on March 16. The Herons rank third in the nation in scoring defense (4.62) and win percentage (.923). William Smith is also seventh in Division III in save percentage (.565).
Senior goalie Sarah Honan, who earned a spot on the Liberty League’s weekly honor roll, ranks third in the country with a 4.60 goals against average. She is 10th in save percentage (.565). Honan has also scooped up a team-high 32 ground balls.
Senior Alexandra Bird leads the Herons with 38 points and 29 goals. Bird sit atop the Liberty League and ranks 26th in the nation in free position percentage (.632). Junior Melissa Moore has dished out a team-high 12 assists. She also garnered a spot on the league’s weekly honor roll after posting five points, six ground balls, six draws and five caused turnovers over the weekend. Sophomore Laura Rollins has logged a team-high 19 caused turnovers and classmate Bizzer Gahagan leads the way with 37 draws.
The Herons are back in action with two Liberty League games this weekend. William Smith will play at St. Lawrence on Friday, April 21 at 4 p.m. and then take on Clarkson in Potsdam at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.
