HWS Wins CASE Higher Ed Awards

For exceptional work produced across student recruitment, fundraising, photography and news, Hobart and William Smith have earned seven awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in its 2018 District II Accolades program. CASE District II is the largest of all member regions in North America.

The annual Accolades program celebrates institutional accomplishments and higher education professionals for their work across areas ranging from fundraising, alum relations and student recruitment to marketing and communications. The winning HWS entries are:

The HWS Update, the newly redesigned news section of the Colleges’ website, won a Silver award in the digital media category of the “Platinum” division, automatically entering it for consideration in the national CASE Circle of Excellence award program. The HWS Update is the hub that keeps the HWS community informed across channels, ranging from traditional news stories and social media content to campus posters and the ever-popular This Week in Photos (TWIP) photo gallery.

For two portfolios of photographs that appeared in TWIP, Chief Photographer Kevin Colton earned a pair of CASE awards in the Platinum category, “Excellence in Photography.” A gallery of athletics photos won Bronze and a selection of photos capturing various HWS points of distinction received honorable mention. In June, Colton was named the best photographer in higher education with a 2017 Gold Award from CASE.

The Colleges’ new admissions student prospectus, also known as the HWS Viewbook, received a Silver award in the category for publication design. Created entirely in-house, the piece brings an enhanced focus on academic and extracurricular opportunities, pride points and outcomes. The Viewbook features student profiles, captivating photography and a modern style to help shape a narrative around the HWS mission to prepare students to lead lives of consequence.

Winning Silver in the category for “creativity on a shoestring” were a pair of lighthearted videos created to celebrate President Emeritus Mark D. Gearan L.H.D. ’17 in the concluding months of his presidency. One video, “President Gearan’s Bucket List,” was produced entirely in house and the other video, “John King Presents Breaking News on President Mark D. Gearan,” was produced pro bono by CNN’s John King, drawing on materials provided by the HWS Office of Communications. The videos were unveiled during a New York City gala for the Gearans and were later shown during Reunion Weekend 2017. The pair of videos also earned an honorable mention in the “Alumni and Fundraising” video category.

HWS also won a Bronze award in the special events category for planning, promoting and hosting a gala in New York City to celebrate Gearan’s legacy of accomplishments during his 18 years of service. The Gearan Gala functioned as an official sendoff and thank-you to the Colleges’ longest serving president and his family. The celebration and tribute to Gearan’s legacy also served as encouragement to give back to the Colleges through the President Mark D. Gearan and Mary Herlihy Gearan Endowed Scholarship Fund, the largest endowed scholarship in the history of the Colleges. The gala featured notable speakers from the HWS community, as well as Gearan’s former students, HWS faculty and major donors.
