Samayoa ’19 Attends 90th Academy Awards

As a guest of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, William Samayoa ’19 will cheer on the 90th annual Academy Awards’ nominees, presenters and talent as they walk down the red carpet on Sunday. Samayoa secured his attendance to the black-tie event through his internships at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and FremantleMedia North America last summer.

As an invited guest of the Oscars Fan Experience this weekend, he will also attend an exclusive viewing party of the show. Samayoa is one of 68 interns nominated from across 20 top entertainment companies in Los Angeles to participate in the inaugural Academy GOLD Talent Development & Inclusion Program.

Follow Samayoa on Sunday as he takes over HWS’ official Instagram account.

During his time with the Academy, Samayoa led a Snapchat takeover of the company’s account, was elected as the student speaker at the GOLD graduation, and was paired with a career mentor who he continues to talk to each month about his professional interests and plans.

“It’s been incredible to see how my network has expanded since my summer with the Academy,” says Samayoa. “The other interns and I are like a family now. We constantly encourage and share opportunities with each other.”

At HWS, Samayoa intends to graduate with majors in writing and rhetoric, as well as media and society. A Posse Scholar, he has studied abroad in Norwich, England, serves as a Writing Colleague, and works for IT Services, the Office of Communications and Student Activities.

“When I was first admitted into HWS, I had no idea what direction my life would be headed in,” Samayoa says. “My academic experiences at the Colleges fueled my passion for pursuing a career in entertainment. These professional experiences have only further motivated both my studies and growth as a leader.”

The 90th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. EST, Sunday, March 4.
