Truswell ’68 to Lead National Physician Group

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) recently named Dr. William H. Truswell Jr. ’68, P’01 to serve as president of the organization for the 2017-2018 term year.  During his nearly four decades of practice, Truswell estimates he has performed more than 30,000 surgeries, including major head and neck cancer resection and reconstruction, and facial trauma. Today, Truswell’s practices in Easthampton, Mass., and Seabrook Island, S.C. focus on cosmetic facial surgery.

“My goals for this coming year are to reinforce the AAFPRS code of ethics and continue to educate the public in seeking qualified, trained and experienced facial plastic surgeons for their needs,” says Truswell. “When we further elevate public trust, it leads to safer, better facial plastic surgery outcomes.”

A frequent lecturer in the United States, South America, Asia and Europe, Truswell has been a member of the AAFPRS for more than 40 years and is a fellow on the FACE TO FACE Committee – the AAFPRS National Domestic Violence Project, and is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He is also the Vice President of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and next year will become the president of the board for a 3 year term.

Truswell is formerly the Medical President of the Hampshire County chapter of the American Cancer Society. He has published several textbooks and papers, including Lasers and Light, Peels and Abrasions-Application and Treatments, Surgical Facial Rejuvenation-A Roadmap to Safe and Reliable Outcomes and Skin Resurfacing and Chemical Peels.

After graduating from Hobart, he received his medical degree from The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his general surgery training in Syracuse, and did a dual residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He has completed 8 medical mission trips to Vietnam, China and Dubai.

While at the Colleges, Truswell was a member of Delta Chi fraternity, Canterbury Club and the Statesmen squash team. As a student of chemistry, Truswell made dean’s list and was an Honors student.

The AAFPRS is the world’s largest specialty association for facial plastic surgery. The organization seeks to educate medical professionals, government and the general public about facial plastic surgery as a specialty that requires intensive training and competence, embodies high ethical standards, artistic ideals, commitment to humanitarian service and a desire to enhance the quality of human life.
