Temple Gives Keynote at 20th World Congress

Charles Temple, professor of education, delivered the closing keynote address to the 20th World Congress of the International Reading Association July 29 in Manila, the Phillipines. Alan Luke, of Queensland, Australia, gave the opening speech, to a convention drawing 2,000 educators from dozens of countries–with heavy participation from the Phillipines, Viet Nam, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Temple used the occasion to promote the work of the Reading & Writing for Critical Thinking Project, now that the Open Society Institute has commissioned him and four colleagues to produce a new set of materials for teacher training in literacy instruction, intended for use in developing countries. While at the conference, Temple, former IRA President Donna Ogle, and others offered workshops for filipino teacher educators outside the conference.
