Weare Dance to Teach and Perform

The Kate Weare Company, a dance ensemble based in New York City, will come to Hobart and William Smith Colleges next week. Over the span of three days, a team of professional dancers will teach several master classes in dance technique, composition, and partnering. The series of classes will culminate with a performance by the company on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Winn-Seeley gym-theater.

Kate Weare is the artistic director of the company. She earned her BFA in dance from California Institute of the Arts in 1994 and has since won several prestigious awards and fellowships including a 2009 Princess Grace Award for Choreography and a 2007 Fellowship at the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography.

The company also includes dancers Adrian Clark, Marlena Penney Oden, and Leslie Kraus who was, in fact, named by Dance Magazine one of 2009’s “25 to watch.” Each dancer holds a degree in dance and/or choreography and has established an impressive background in the field. They will accompany Weare to her visit to Hobart and William Smith.

Professor of Dance Cynthia Williams has enjoyed the opportunity to witness the Kate Weare Company perform previously and has arranged for the group to come to the Colleges due to her “enthusiasm for the originality of the choreography and the exquisite skill of the dancers.”
