DiPalma garners All-America recognition

William Smith senior coxswain Abbie DiPalma is one of 18 student-athletes named to the 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/Pocock All-America teams. She represented the Herons on the second team.

This season, DiPalma led the William Smith varsity eight to an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship, May 28-29, at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif. She won a bronze medal in the V8 at the New York State Championships and captured three straight Liberty League Boat of the Week Awards in the fall.

DiPalma will be making her third trip to the NCAA Championship after piloting the varsity eight to a fourth place finish in the petite final in 2008 and serving as a spare in 2007.

DiPalma raises the number of CRCA All-American awards won by Herons to 18. Coxswain Derith Hart ’01 was the first in 2000. DiPalma is fourth William Smith coxswain to be tabbed an All-American, joining Hart, Heather Hawkins ’03, and Kenzie Cannon ’09.

Rowing All-Americans are selected based on several criteria, including 2,000-meter erg score, coach’s comments, the team’s record and strength of schedule, and the team’s end of season regatta results.
