Senior forward Emily Atwan scored a pair of second half goals to lead the 15th-ranked William Smith field hockey team to a 2-0 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence on McCooey Field today. With the win, the Herons reached the 10-win plateau for the 21st time in Head Coach Sally Scatton’s 23 seasons.
William Smith (10-3, 3-2) completely dominated the first half, but couldn’t solve first-year goalie Nicole Matos. The Herons had a 16-0 advantage in shots, but Matos logged nine saves before halftime to keep the game scoreless.
In the 42nd minute, Atwan finally broke through for a 1-0 lead. She batted home an insurance goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the contest to raise her team-leading total to 12 goals.
Matos finished the match with 14 saves, while William Smith sophomore goalie Taryn Little earned the shutout with one save.
The final shot totals were 31 for the Herons and just two for the Saints. William Smith earned 13 penalty corners to SLU’s four.
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Ursinus. That match is scheduled to begin at noon.
