As a part of the national effort to feed America “One Backpack at a Time,” Hobart and William Smith Colleges have brought the BackPack Initiative to campus this holiday season. This December, students are asking others to step in and donate goods in order to fill backpacks with food for students at Geneva’s West Street School.
“This is all an effort to support our community and our world,” says Patrice Thomas ’13. “Global citizenship is the model.”
Donation bins can be found around campus where students can contribute goods such as apple sauce, peanut butter, juice boxes, canned goods, and other edibles. All food should be child-friendly, non-perishable, and easily consumed.
The BackPack Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. The hope is that HWS students can think of these children when they shop for their food, and by donating snacks and other food items.
