The William Smith soccer team moved up one spot to No. 2 in the country in this week’s NSCAA Division III women’s soccer poll. The Herons improved to 4-0-1 tying No. 1 Messiah and defeating Cortland over the weekend.
The Herons played through two overtime periods to a scoreless tie with top-ranked Messiah in the first game of the 2011 Heron Cup on Saturday. The Falcons had scored at least one goal in their previous 70 matches.
On Sunday, William Smith defeated Cortland 1-0. First-year Krista Longo scored the game-winner off an assist from the Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week, junior Kelsey Hill. The Heron defense did not allow the Red Dragons to put a single shot on goal.
Junior Whitney Frary leads William Smith with four points on two goals. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Davis has played 455:42 and stopped all five shots that she has faced this season. She ranks first in the Liberty League with four shutouts.
William Smith will travel to take on Buffalo State on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
