The William Smith soccer team scored early in the second half to defeat host RIT 1-0 in a Liberty League game played this afternoon.
The Herons improved to 10-0-1 and 4-0-0 in the Liberty League, and earned their 10th shutout this fall. The Tigers fell to 4-7-0 and 1-3-0 in league play. Senior goalie Amanda Davis stopped the only shot she faced in goal for William Smith to post her seventh clean sheet this year.
Senior Kate Redmond had a scoring chance early in the first half, but she banged a shot off the left post. The Herons broke the scoreless tie 7:59 into the second stanza. This time Redmond set up the play, when she crossed a pass from the right corner to find first-year Dineo Mmutla at the left side of the goal. Mmutla sent a shot past the keeper for her third tally of the season.
Ashley Valenti stopped four shots in all 90 minutes in goal for the RIT. The Herons held a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when the Herons travel to take on St. Lawrence in another Liberty League match slated for 2 p.m.
