The Hobart soccer team edged host Nazareth 1-0 in a non-league game played this afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium. The Statesmen improve to 11-2-0 overall, and the Golden Flyers drop to 6-6-0.
After a scoreless first half, Hobart finally broke through in the 60th minute. Senior Tommy Hayes sent a pass across the box to junior Caetano Sanchez. Sanchez then lofted a shot over the head of Nazareth’s goalkeeper Kyle Connolly. It was Sanchez’s second goal this fall. Hayes is now tied to lead the Statesmen with seven points on three goals and an assist.
Senior Alex Witherell earned his second collegiate shutout, finishing with four saves. Connolly stopped five shots in all 90 minutes.
Nazareth held a 15-13 edge in shots. The Golden Flyers also took six corner kicks, while Hobart earned five.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 14, when they host Bard for a Liberty League match beginning at 4 p.m.
