Tilley’s Op-Ed on Arafat’s Death in D&C

Virginia Tilley, associate professor of political science, wrote an op-ed on the death of Yasser Arafat and the possibilities of peace for Palestinians, titled “Change at Palestinian Helm Poses Danger, Opportunity,” in the Nov. 12 Democrat and Chronicle.

“The death of Palestinian president Yasser Arafat presents new opportunities and dangers for the Middle East — but not the ones that many people think,” wrote Tilley. “David Ben-Gurion once said, back in the 1950s, that it would be worth a million dollars to pay the Arabs to start a war, because it would let Israel seize the West Bank. It’s worth as much to Sharon to make sure that no real peace process is forced on him, and therefore that no truly unified and democratic Palestinian government forms.”
