HWS Ice Rink Opening Postponed

Due to unsafe ice conditions, the Winter Wonderland grand opening has been postponed. With adequate weather conditions, the event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28. Should the grand opening need to be postponed once more, an official call will be made on Thursday, Jan. 26.

Soon, HWS students will have the opportunity to go ice skating without ever leaving campus thanks to the new ice rink that was built in the Sunken Gardens over break. On Saturday, Jan. 28, the HWS community can celebrate the rink’s grand opening with free hot chocolate and coffee while they take advantage of this new student space.

“During the winter months, we all suffer from some degree of cabin fever,” explains Director of Student Activities Robert Pool. “The ice rink will encourage students, faculty, staff and their families and guests to get outside, get some fresh air, and enjoy one of the most enchanting outdoor spots on campus.”

Students can bring or borrow ice skates. A dozen pair of hockey skates will be available for students to borrow thanks to the Geneva Recreation Department. In addition to hot chocolate and coffee, the grand opening will offer students transportation to the rink with a continuous shuttle from Medbery Parking Lot starting at 11 a.m. A horse drawn buggy also will offer a shuttle services from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In addition to ice skating, the rink will offer regular hours for figure skating, broomball and hockey games. With cross country skiing and snow trails already acting as a lure to the Houghton House area, the rink provides a central gathering space for nature lovers.

While only time will tell, the rink stands to become a center of campus winter activity, speculates Pool, who has already fielded a multitude of requests from students to reserve the space for fundraisers and club activities.

The rink’s hours during the grand opening will run from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thereafter, hours of operation will vary depending on weather and student staffing. In general, open skate is planned for Fridays from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. As demand, staff and weather requires, hours will be adjusted.
