William Smith first-years Melanie Baltzer, Morgan Burgess, Alexandra Clark, and Katie Lehmann represented the Herons at a rowing clininc for Special Olympics New Jersey today in conjunction with the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship on Lake Mercer this weekend.
Each of the eight teams competing in the championship were teamed up with two Special Olympics athletes. The Herons explained their sport, showed their teammates their shells and oars and then competed with them in a 300-meter race on an ergometer. Burgress pair with Richard to post the fastest combined time of the competition and were presented with certificates at the end of the event.
Beginning with the 2011-12 academic year, the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advsory Committee initiated a partnership with Special Olympics. In addition to encouraging student-athletes nationwide to get involved with Special Olympics, participants at all NCAA Division III Championships have the opportunity to improve the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with student-athletes and to foster a mutual learning experience between student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes.
