Working with Senator Nozzolio

Daniel “Griffin” Marsh ’17 is currently exploring political career options as an intern in the district office of New York Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R-Fayette). Located in Seneca Falls, the district office is an ideal location for him to learn about the intricacies of local government, Marsh says.

Marsh’s position within the office focuses primarily on constituent outreach and responding to the concerns of residents within New York’s 54th Senate District. As an intern, Marsh fields telephone calls and researches constituent issues and opinions. He also works directly with Senator Nozzolio and has been invited to sit in on meetings with fellow staff and constituents as they solve public policy issues. Additionally, Marsh helps with efforts to recognize distinguished community members that have been honored.

“While working in the office I have not only become more aware of current events in state government, but have also gained a deeper knowledge into how a State Senator’s office operates,” he explains.

The internship is offered as part of the New York State Senate Student Programs, which affords graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to explore firsthand the legislative process through internships in district offices. The Senate Undergraduate Session Assistants Program offers approximately 30 talented undergraduates the chance to participate in an on-site, academic enriching and career-building work experience.

“HWS encourages students to explore and learn through internships, and I decided that would be a unique way of getting firsthand experience,” Marsh says. “The internship with Senator Nozzolio’s office has provided me the opportunity to explore some of my interests, and I believe it will help guide my choices in the future.”

This summer, Marsh is also working as an intern in the Office of Yates County District Attorney Valerie G. Gardner. As a first-year student, he entered Hobart and William Smith with a strong concentration on obtaining a pre-law degree. However, throughout the year, he has expanded his career interests to include international relations with a focus on the Middle East. In addition to taking political science courses, Marsh has also begun to study Arabic through classes offered at the Colleges. He plans to major in international relations and economics.
