The William Smith College squash team earned a spot in the Epps Cup championship match with a 5-4 win over Mount Holyoke College at the College Squash Association Team Championship this afternoon at Harvard.
The Herons will face Tufts, who topped Connecticut College 8-1 in its semifinal match today. The championship will be played at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 15, at Harvard.
First-year Michaelann Denton won her first two matches and then won by forfeit in her third to start the Herons off with a 1-0 lead. Then senior Molly Doran posted a 3-1 (11-9, 11-7,7-11, 11-4) victory at No. 9 to make it 2-0. Sophomore Brooke Hayes also won 3-1 (11-5, 13-11, 9-11, 11-1) at No. 6 to give William Smith a 3-0 advantage. The Lyons then battled back with wins at No. 2, 5 and 1, but sophomore Justine Shank earned an 11-8, 11-1, 8-11, 11-3 victory at No. 8 for the Herons. Mount Holyoke logged its fourth win at the No. 7 spot to tie things up at 4-4. It all came down to the No. 4 spot. William Smith senior Andrea Tran clinched the overall victory with an 11-9, 11-3, 6-11, 11-4 triumph.
The Herons improved to 14-5 this season. William Smith is seeking its fourth CSA Cup, having captured the 2006 and 2007 Walker Cup and the 2009 Epps Cup.
