The Hobart College tennis team rallied past St. Lawrence 5-4 this afternoon in a match contested at the HWS Tennis Center. The Statesmen are now 9-5 this season while the Saints fall to 7-6.
Facing a 3-0 deficit at the end of doubles play, Hobart won five of the six singles matches to secure the team victory over St. Lawrence. Sophomore Michael Rusk defeated Rhonny Rosario 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to start the comeback for the Statesmen. At. No. 2, senior Michael Fields collected a three set victory over Dean Sponholz, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Sophomore Matt DePrima topped John Megas in a three set thriller, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), to bring the match score to 4-3. First-year Miles Singer evened the match at four besting Paul Barrett 7-5, 6-1.
The team result came down to the match in the No. 6 spot. Hobart first-year Harry Nichols defeated Kevin Frommer 6-3, 7-5. Nichols had three match points to work with in the second set when Frommer hit a shot into the net to give the Statesmen the 5-4 win.
Hobart will be back in action Thursday, April 16, when they host Rochester Institute of Technology at the HWS Tennis Center. The match with the Tigers is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
